USM Modular furniture systems

Modular furniture in timeless designs
That is the principle behind USM since its inception over 40 years ago. Furniture for the home and office environments which is created from just a few basic elements. A tailor-made solution that can be expanded or reconfigured at any time. Each piece of furniture allows room for individual versatility and creativity.
USM Modular Furniture
In 1965, USM‘s Haller modular furniture system was the first of USM‘s modular furniture systems to be launched onto the market. It was initially developed by Paul Schärer Jr., an engineering graduate of the ETH of Zurich, together with Fritz Haller, an architect based in Solothurn (CH), to meet USM‘s own requirements in the offices of its newly constructed production facility in Münsingen. Within a short time the system was also successful at the international level. Today, USM‘s Haller modular furniture system has become a timeless design classic.
Over the past years further product lines have been developed which are mutually compatible and which are by now included amongst those Swiss export products in great demand: USM ‘Display’ (presentation system, 1989), USM‘s ‘Kitos’ modular table system (1990) and, to supplement these developments, USM‘s ‘Inos’ internal organization system (1996). With the launch of the new space-saving and space-creating modular furniture system, the eleven22 at the end of 1999, USM is following on from the basic philosophy of its classic, but is also taking completely new paths toward meeting the diverse requirements of computerized working environments which are constantly being reorganized and are based on the utilization of scant resources.

Modular character
Each USM Modular Furniture is constructed in a modular fashion and is based on three basic elements in each case, a fact which facilitates limitless diversity for the individual creation of furnishings. USM furniture which is assembled using these modular elements can be dismantled and reconfigured at any time. It can be organized individually and supplemented with new elements without any problems, even if it was bought decades ago.

Product development

USM Modular Furniture are being continually further developed and adapted to the changing requirements of their use, without this being manifestly obvious externally. Product innovations are developed according to the basic principle of „retrospective compatibility“. This ensures that each new system component can be integrated into existing structures. In this way furnishings can be re-equipped with USM products, which correspond to the latest state-of-the-art technology, even after many years.

High quality
USM always combines the demand for timeless design with high product quality. USM Modular Furniture are manufactured in its own production facility at the Münsingen site (near Berne) in Switzerland for the global market, whereby final assembly operations are carried out by hand. USM‘s consistent investment in contemporary means of production and manufacturing processes facilitates efficient production. At the same time high-precision processing and first-class primary materials are at the forefront: the hard-wearing, corrosion-resistant, chromed-steel construction of the connecting elements, paneling elements made from resistant materials like powder-coated steel plate, perforated metallic components and glass, and the high level of processing quality of the table tops made from wood, granite, glass and artificial resin.

Expression of lifestyle
The possibilities of use are almost limitless. Either on their own or in combination, USM Modular Furniture form the structural elements for office environments, individual or group workstations, shops, libraries, schools, laboratories or exhibitions. On account of their diversity they also represent an excellent choice of furnishings for private living areas, because they can be combined with all styles (Classical, Baroque, youthful styles, Modernist etc.) and incorporated into all types of room surroundings (wood, brickwork, wallpaper, concrete, metal, glass). Even if USM Modular Furniture have been developed from one simple system, they always represent individual elements of room creation which express the generosity, aesthetic nature and style of the user.
